“Mere chanting of the mantras without knowing their meaning is like a horse carrying a load of sandalwood pieces on its back without experiencing their fragrance. Today, like that horse, we are carrying the load of the mantras without experiencing the fragrance of their meaning. If we are able to know the meaning, we will be able to visualize the form behind the particular mantra. One has to chant the Vēdas mantras at least by knowing a little of their meaning.

Chanting with focus on the meaning, thus, calms and clears the mind and actually rejuvenates it. You might notice that sometimes your mind is much clearer and your attention more focused, after chanting. Every word that we utter and every thought that we think leaves its subtle impression on the mind, and so do all the words and sounds that we listen to and absorb. Everything that we listen to also leaves its residue in the mind.”

Instructions:

Smaranam is the third step on the 9 fold path of devotion. It means “Remembering the Lord”.

Chanting a mantram is the same as remembering Him provided the mind concentrates on the mantram and understands what it stands for. The word ‘mantram’ has two components: ‘Man’ meansmind and ‘Tri’ means to cross. So, that which enablesus to cross the ocean of the mind is a mantram. The mantram is the living symbol of the Lord. When we repeat the mantram,
we remind ourselves of the Supreme Reality that resides in our hearts. The more we chant the mantram the deeper it sinks into our consciousness. As it goes deeper, it strengthens our will, heals the old divisions that cause conflict and turmoil in our mind, and provides deep resources of strength, patience and love.

The following is expected to be followed for this Sadhana Undertaking:

1. 21 Omkarams
2. 9 Samastha Lokas
3. Om Shanthi Shanthi Shanthi Hi…

Purpose:

One day Swami was asked “What happens when we die?”

In Kodaikanal, Swami gave different reply “This is what happens” using the *_Kundalini_ Phenomenon*

Swami said, there are seven main _chakras_ (spiritual centres) in our spine, which are seats of various levels of consciousness.

At the time of one’s death, if one’s consciousness is only at the lowest _Mooladhara and Swadishtana centres_, one will be reborn as an animal.

If it is between the third and the fourth, _Manipura_ and _Anahat_, one would be born as a human. If from _Vissudhi_ (Throat) and _Ajna_ (Space between the Eyebrow) _chakras_, there will be no rebirth in earth but one becomes an _Yaksha_, _Gandharva_ or a _Siddha_ – a Demi God or an Angel. Only when consciousness is at _Sahasrara_ (Head/Fontannel) _chakra_ it is completely liberated.
Swami said when the _Kundalini_ pierces the _Manipura chakra_, the person becomes free of past live _vasanas_ and starts overcoming the worldly mind set and desires.
So what to do for the _Kundalini_ to pierce the _Manipura chakra_?

1. Omkar Chanting- works on the _Sahasrara Chakra_ and _Vissudhi Chakra_

2. Jyothi Mediation- works on _Ajna Chakra_ and _Anahat_ (Heart Chakra)

3. _Surya Namaskar_- works on the _Manipura Chakra_
Three _sadhanas_ to ensure that we get rebirth as a Human /Angel or becoming one with the Divine!

The Pranava (primeval sound OM) recital is one form of such spiritual effort. It is laid down at Prashaanthi Nilayam that the early dawn recital of Om should be done twenty one times. This number is not arbitrarily fixed; it has a significance of its own.

We have the five karmendhriyas (senses of action) and the five jnaanendhriyas (senses of perception);
we have also praanas (the five vital energies or airs) to sustain us.
Then we have the five koshas (sheaths), enclosing the Divine Spark that is the Reality. These total up to twenty.
Hence the recitation of Om twenty one times purifies and clarifies all these twenty components and makes man the twenty-first entity, ready for the final merger with Reality.

The Jeevathathwam (life-principle) merges with Parathathwam (the Supreme Reality). The jeevathathwam may be pictured as a rider on the twenty-headed horse.

Finally, you end the Pranava recital with the recital of ‘shaanthi’ three times. That completes the process of clarification and purification. The first call for shaanthi (peace chant) is for the purity of the aadhibhouthik (body) part of the Self. The second call is for the purity of the aadhidhaivik (the mind). The third is for the purification of the aadhyaathmik (the spirit). This Pranava recital will tone you up, calm all agitations in the mind and quicken the downpour of Grace.

This collective prayer offering is for the happiness and well-being of all beings in the greater Universe.
